Welcome to Biology: The purpose of this document is to give general information about this course.
Course Description: Biology is the study of the living world. Students will discover and explore the laws and concepts that give them a better understanding of the living world around them. Teaching methods used in the course reinforce the science processes emphasized in the state curriculum guidelines.
Requested Course Materials:
1) Sharpened Pencils or Pens (Blue or Black Ink Only)
2) Notebook for Journals (Honors Students Only)
3) Loose Leaf Lined Paper
4) Text book-Biology
5) 3x5 Index Cards (At Least 5 Packs)
6) Glue Sticks (2)
7) Colored pencils for Drawing and Coloring Biological Structures
8) AHS Agenda Book
9) Science Lab Fee
The following materials will be used quite frequently throughout this course. Students may feel free to donate any of the following items J:
1) Kleenex
2) Sanitizer
3) Dry Erase markers-any color
4) Ream of paper-any color
Text Book: A course textbook, (Biology) Miller and Levine, will be issued. You are required to keep the book in good condition and return it at the end of the school year. Do not write or mark in these books. Do not leave your book in the classroom!
Class Work/Homework: In-class work will be assigned regularly and should be completed during the class period. Homework will consist of class work that was not completed in class and/or any assigned homework. COME TO CLASS PREPARED! You will not be permitted to go to your locker or another classroom for any items. If you are absent, it is your (student’s) responsibility to gather all information for each of the days missed and complete the work within the timeframe given stated in the AHS Handbook.
Participation: Participation in class discussions, activities, or labs is required for all students in order to increase learning. No points are taken off for incorrect answers.
Make-Up/Late Work: Make-up work for excused absences will be assigned for each day missed and will be done so by agreement between student and teacher according to the handbook. (See the AHS Handbook for policy/procedure for unexcused absences.) All class work and homework assignments must be turned in by the due date and time to receive full credit. Late work will be graded and then reduced by 50% and will need to be turned in the assignment the NEXT DAY not the NEXT CLASS PERIOD…..afterwards, it will not be accepted.
Quizzes/Exams: Tests may be cumulative, meaning that they can include anything that has been taught up to that test. This will help you (the student) retain more of the information covered in the class. These cumulative exams will be given about every one and half weeks. Quizzes will be given periodically throughout each lesson. These may be scheduled or unscheduled. If you are absent, arrangements will be made to make up the missed test/quiz. Some of the tests/quizzes will be open notes so it is critical that you make every effort to be in class at all times. This is to ensure that you have all information necessary for accurate notes. There will be a comprehensive exam at the end of each quarter and each semester.
Grading Scale: Arlington Community Schools grading scale is as follows:
93-100 A
85-92 B
84-75 C
